The Role of the Pituitary Gland
The pituitary gland, a small but crucial part of your brain, is responsible for regulating your body’s hormone levels. It influences various functions by controlling growth, thyroid, adrenal, and reproductive hormones. However, when a tumor develops in this gland, it can disrupt these vital processes.
Types of Hormone-Secreting Pituitary Adenomas
There are three primary types of hormone-secreting pituitary adenomas, each affecting the body differently:
Prolactin-Secreting Adenomas
These tumors can lead to symptoms such as irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and unexpected milk discharge in women. Men may experience a decrease in libido and erectile difficulties.
Growth Hormone-Secreting Adenomas
These adenomas cause acromegaly, a condition characterized by enlarged hands and feet, facial changes, and can also lead to diabetes and high blood pressure.
Adrenocorticotropic Hormone-Secreting Adenomas
This type results in Cushing’s disease, which manifests as weight gain, a round face, stretch marks, and bone loss.
Benefits of Early Detection and Treatment
Recognizing unusual changes in your body early can lead to better recovery outcomes. Common symptoms like fatigue or changes in appearance might not just be due to stress or aging; they could indicate a hormonal imbalance caused by these adenomas.
Endoscopic Surgical Treatment
Dr. Kalyan Bommakanti, along with ENT surgeon Dr. Vyshnavi Bommakanti, performs endoscopic transnasal surgery to remove these tumors. This minimally invasive approach involves accessing the tumor through the nose, avoiding any need to cut through the skull.
Post-Surgery Recovery
After surgery, patients often experience a gradual normalization of hormone levels over weeks to months. Women may see the return of regular menstrual cycles, while improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and physical appearance are also common. Early intervention can significantly enhance recovery and restore quality of life.
