What is Acromegaly?
Acromegaly is a condition characterized by the excessive secretion of growth hormone, often due to a pituitary adenoma. This hormonal imbalance leads to gradual and noticeable changes in the body, affecting both appearance and overall health.
Recognizing the Symptoms
Acromegaly manifests through a variety of physical changes. Patients may notice an enlargement of the jaw, nose, and brow, resulting in coarser facial features. Additionally, there is often a widening of teeth spacing. Hands and feet may also enlarge, making rings and shoes feel tighter. Other symptoms include a thickened tongue, deepened voice, and changes in skin texture.
Systemic and Metabolic Effects
Beyond physical changes, acromegaly can affect internal organs and metabolic processes. Patients may experience uncontrolled blood sugar levels, leading to diabetes, as well as increased sweating and oily skin. Joint pain and fatigue are also common complaints.
When to Suspect a Pituitary Tumor
If you notice gradual changes in facial appearance, increased tissue size, new onset diabetes, sleep apnea, or persistent headaches, a pituitary tumor might be the underlying cause. These symptoms warrant further investigation to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment Through Endoscopic Surgery
The primary treatment for acromegaly is advanced endoscopic transnasal surgery. This minimally invasive approach allows Dr. Kalyan Bommakanti, in collaboration with ENT surgeon Dr. Vyshnavi Bommakanti, to effectively remove the tumor without cutting through the skull. Post-surgery, patients typically see a significant reduction in growth hormone levels, halting the progression of symptoms.
Post-Surgical Monitoring and Care
After surgery, regular monitoring is crucial. Blood tests for growth hormone and IGF-1 levels, along with periodic MRIs, help assess tumor status. Continuous evaluation of diabetes, joint symptoms, and sleep apnea ensures comprehensive care and recovery.
